The excitement this week is our Skype session with the author of our read aloud, Capture the Flag, Kate Messner. We have prepared questions to ask her and are looking forward to hearing about her life as a writer and her other books.
Our new read aloud will be a historical fiction book to go along with our fourth grade Social Studies curriculum, Weasel, by Cynthia DeFelice. It is set during the time of Westward Expansion and will keep us on the edges of our seats with suspense.
In reading, we will also work on our Movie Poster we are creating for Capture the Flag. In class, we will write a summary of the book. Look for the movie posters in the hallway soon! We will also use our Scholastic News magazines a lot in class this week as we focus on summaries and the structure of texts.
In word study, we will continue to work on compound words as we do more word sorts and other activities. You can always go to spellingcity.com to find practice activities for all types of spelling words.
In writing, we will finish up any work we still haven't completed. We will also begin a persuasive writing assignment to go along with an article in our Scholastic News magazine about whether or not schools should ban Halloween from schools.
