We've had a great first three days of school. Your student may have told you that we had a time of team building last Friday afternoon. We played games with both Hoover and Chapman homerooms together to get to know each other better.
This week in reading we will continue our read aloud book, Roxie and the Hooligans. This a great book with an anti-bully message. We will also set up our Reader's Notebooks this week and begin talking about character descriptions, setting, predictions, and connections (text to self, text to text and text to world).
Reading homework each week is to read at least 100 minutes. Twenty minutes 5 times a week is my recommended schedule for those 100 minutes although students can read those 100 minutes however works best for their schedules. I would like students to read the same book at home and at school, carrying it back and forth so that they progress through books better. Students will also keep a simple log of pages/minutes read. The log is due each Monday. If there is no school Monday, they can turn them in on Tuesday.
In Writing Workshop we will start to set up our notebooks after we share how each student decorated their notebooks. We'll write a little bit each day and get into a routine of writing daily and sharing with our peers.
Reminder - Students need their plain white t-shirt by Tuesday morning for Art so they can tie dye them.
