We finished our March Book Madness prior to Spring Break, and The One and Only Ivan won! All four classes voted and the majority said it was the best book on the list. There are actually 68 books on the bracket which could be considered a great "Next Reads" list for any fourth grader. The book buzz this book challenge created was fun to watch as students not only in fourth grade but other grades, too, stopped by the poster in the hallway to see which books were winning.
In reading, we will begin our next read aloud, Mr. Lemoncello's Library. This is a fun new book, a lot like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but set in an incredible library. There are puzzles to solve and so many wonderful children's books mentioned throughout the book.
We will also start a mythology unit. We'll talk about reasons behind mythology and key characters. This unit will last a few weeks.
We will also finish a few book hooks and finally watch them this week. It has been fun learning how to create a movie with a green screen.
In Writing Workshop, we will write an essay that students may choose to submit for a writing contest sponsored by Math Wizard. The prompt is, "Astronauts discover a new planet and decide to visit it. Describe the new planet and what the astronauts find on it. What do they name it?" We will work all week on this story. Submissions are not due until May 16th. Here is the flyer.
In word study, we will begin the "aw" unit. Students can practice their words by visiting the Spelling City website through the link in the sidebar. The assessment will be on Friday, April 11th.
